Transition from Reception to Year 1

Our aim is to ensure that the children experience a smooth transition from the Foundation Stage to Key Stage One. The Year 1 curriculum builds upon and extends the experiences that children have had in Reception. Learning through play will continue to be an important part of the school day. The children will gradually be eased into more formal learning as the year goes on so that they remain motivated, enthused and eager learners. We have a welcoming, cosy reading area as well enhanced provision trays to practically reinforce new learning each week.

Learning and Enhanced Provision in Year 1

In Year 1, we learn how to be even more independent, be a good friend and citizen; whilst taking on the challenge of a brand new and exciting Havannah curriculum! In Year 1, we learn how to be even more independent, be a good friend and citizen; whilst taking on the challenge of a brand new and exciting Havannah curriculum!

We love to learn and explore through play. We setup activities, games and challenges in our outside area for the children to access after their lessons. These create valuable discussions, spark the children's interest and develop independence.

Our units of learning throughout the year are designed and implemented to promote a genuine love of learning and interest.

These units include:

  • Toys - changes in living memory.
  • People who have changed the world.
  • The greatest travellers.
  • Animals including humans.
  • Much more, please see attached the success criterion for Year 1.

"Reading is dreaming with your eyes open" ~ unknown.

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go" ~ Dr Seuss.

Please ensure that your child comes to school everyday with a water bottle and the appropriate school uniform for weather conditions.

Every Thursday, please send in your child's reading record planner and books, ready for a book change and spell check (as detailed in Year 1 Parent information document)

Please don’t hesitate to contact if you have any concerns or queries.
